KiwiRail Graduate Stories

I think that the flexibility of the graduate position will help me truly understand what I actually enjoy. Studying something is often very different to working in that respective area.

With the growing interest in greener transportation options, working on rail is the best place to be. There are so many opportunities in KiwiRail if you just ask around the company. Always ask questions and be proactive so you can get involved in what you are passionate about.

I have learned the basics of rail and all its different components. How rail, road and ferries all tie in together to support our economy and how much of an environmental impact rail provides on helping the NZ government to meet its carbon emissions goals.

I have learned about the immense breadth and scale of KiwiRail and its contribution to New Zealand and how ‘small’ initiatives can have an extensive impact.

My favourite part about the graduate programme was how open the job description is – as I was only in each team for a matter of months, I never got stuck with business-as-usual tasks. This freed me up to spend two years as a sponge, learning about how rail works and how different teams fit together.
