As a result of job loss, reduced hours, or general workplace insecurity, several of my customers have decided to pursue self-employment.

Rather of expecting for the best, career theory advises us to accept uncertainty. What can we do to turn a disadvantage into an advantage? We have no influence over the global context in which we now find ourselves, but we DO have power over how we interact with it. What are your options for navigating this space? Instead of closing your mind (to all possibilities), keep it open (sit tight and hope for the best).

List your abilities first. Don't get too caught up in your job title; you can have more skills than just the title.

Add your strengths after your skills. List your flaws as well, as they're an excellent sign of what you don't want!

Take a step back and consider whether you're missing any key skills. Look through the hundreds of MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) available, starting with Udemy.com and Coursera.org. There may be a short course that you can take to round out your skill set on the cheap and swiftly.

At this point, you might wish to turn your idea into a SMART objective. This usually aids in shaping the direction. The acronym SMART stands for:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

These five criteria should be present in every SMART goal you establish to ensure that it is achievable.

Reach out to your network to sell your idea as it takes shape. This is how the vast majority of individuals find work. Request that former coworkers, employers, relatives, friends, and social media contacts reach out on your behalf.
